Back-Country Pack Trips
There’s no better way to see Wyoming’s high country than from the back of a horse, and none finer to guide you than Wyoming Wilderness Outfitter’s, our partner for a back-country pack trip. Jake Clark, along with his very experienced guides, and string of gentle, well-broke saddle mules and horses, have been taking guests to the back-country since 1950, and no one provides a greater experience or finer Western hospitality.
Pack-trip Itinerary:
Sunday: Arrival at Wyoming High Country Lodge, settle into your accommodations, explore your new surroundings, and enjoy a pleasant visit over the dinner table about the exciting venture to come with your fellow saddle pals.
Monday: Enjoy a full breakfast, gather up your cowboy clothes, and watch while the pack string is readied for the trip There is quite an art to loading and tying a pack, to keep the horse comfortable and the pack secure while traveling. Head out about 10:00 AM, for your unforgettable journey into the most spectacular mountain scenery Wyoming has to offer. You’ll arrive at camp between 2:00 and 4:00 PM, help unpack, and settle into your tepee. You can help pitch the tents and set up camp, take a short hike, or just relax in the mountain splendor. Dinner won’t be long in the making, so get ready for a cowboy’s version of gourmet mountain cooking!
Tuesday and Wednesday: You’ll be hungry for a hearty breakfast, after a good night’s sleep in the fresh mountain air. Food always tastes better in the high country. Take a trip from camp afoot or a’horseback, fishing, hiking or trail-riding, to see some of the special places we have to explore. Either a sack lunch or a campfire hamburger with all the trimmings will satisfy those hunger pangs, then travel back to base camp, and enjoy another high mountain dinner, crackling campfire and more western folklore and cowboy stories.
Thursday: Get ready to break camp after breakfast. We’ll pack the string, and ride back to the Lodge, where you can take a shower, and prepare for an excellent dinner, and an evening of telling your own stories about your trip into the back-country with Jake and his crew.
Friday: You may be able to take a trail-ride from the Lodge, or we offer a fun-filled shopping/sightseeing trip to Cody, WY, home of the historical Buffalo Bill Museum. There are some wonderful shops on Main St., with unique western offerings, a trolley tour through Cody, and the world-famous Cody Nite Rodeo. And of course, there are cowboys everywhere!
Saturday: Wind up the week with your last breakfast out on the deck, share your pictures and exchange addresses with your new comrades, and make plans to meet again, next summer, at Wyoming High Country.
